The National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS), which is the largest agricultural research institute of basic life science in Japan, was established on 1 April 2001 as an independent administrative institution of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries and a center for basic studies to develop innovative agricultural biotechnologies and new bio-industries. The Second Five-year Plan started on 1 April 2006. During the next five years, the Institute will advance the technologies developed in the First Five-year Plan. These include sequencing of the entire rice genome; sequencing of the silkworm genome and recombination of livestock and silkworm genes; and bioscience research that will help to improve human nutrition and promote the creation of new bioindustries.

We would like to convey our sincere sympathy to the victims of Great Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake. On March 11, National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences launched a task force for the earthquake-damage immediately after the earthquake occurred. The task force promptly proceeded to confirm the safety of staff, investigate the damage to buildings and rooms, and examine the safety of on-going experiments. The task force finally confirmed that, as of March 11, the damage which our institute sustained DOES NOT affect the area surrounding our Institute. Currently, all members of our Institute are working together to perform restorations and to resume research work as soon as possible. We now understand that some aspects of restoration will take a long time. We sincerely ask for your understanding and cooperation in our efforts. A great number of expressions of sympathy and encouragement have been conveyed to our Institute from inside and outside of Japan, and we all would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks for those concerns.
Welcome to our research group at National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS) of Japan. Our group belongs to the research unit Plant-Microbe Interactions Research Unit at NIAS. Diseases of plants caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, pests, and other microorganisms cause losses in yields of crops. Therefore, controlling plant diseases is important for a stable food supply. A major aim of our research is to develop a method to control plant diseases through understanding the nature of plant-microbe interactions.

The Rice Expression Profile Database (RiceXPro) is a repository of gene expression data derived from microarray experiments encompassing the entire life cycle of the rice plant from germination, seedling, tillering, stem elongation, panicle initiation, booting, heading, flowering, and ripening stage. This database is part of a project on rice gene expression profiling which aims to characterize the function of all predicted genes in rice using an oligonucleotide microarray platform based on the manually curated gene models in RAP-DB and rice full-length cDNA sequence (KOME) information. The project is supported by a grant from the Genomics for Agricultural Innovation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan.
